Lafarge Beocin Cement Plant, operating in Serbia since the acquisition in 2002, is a certified supporter of domestic construction industry, leader in cement and concrete production and leader of innovations in the building sector. Locally, the company is implementing a globally defined de-carbonization strategy aimed to sustainability principles and continuous reduction of industrial footprint to the climate and bio-diversity. Reduction of CO2 emission by 40% by the year 2030, that is, transition to a net zero emission by the year 2050 is a commong goal of all Holcim Group members. The fact that about 10% of total annual CO2 emission is caused by the construction sector, points out the responsibility and liability of building materials producers, therefore the company is focused on reduction of natural resources use, promoting the sustainable development and, in the first place, enlargement of products portfolio that will decrease harmful gasses emission.
Considering that production of both cement and concrete is considered responsible for harmful gasses emission and that for those construction materials there is no equally efficient alternative, Lafarge’s experience is extremely significant being the company has confirmed that, by applying state-of-the-art knowledge and technology, such materials can be produced and transformed into “green” materials. Transformation in the Beocin Cement Plant is conducted towards development of the “green” cement and concrete, as well as technical solutions for the infrastructure which application significantly reduces emission of harmful gasses into atmosphere. New range of products has been presented during last years, characterized by drastic reduction of carbon content per ton of material, with tendency to develop a product portfolio with net zero CO2 emission in the future.
Lafarge ECO portfolio that consists of the green cement, both bulk and bags, green concrete and infrastructure binders was designed with the goal to support the sustainable construction principles. Due to low CO2 content per ton of material, all ECO products fulfill requirements of the leading green certificates (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB, WELL, EDGE) contributing to a new building culture in Serbia as well.
Green Bulk Cement
Low thermal hydration cement CEM II/B-M(S-V)42,5N LH, presented to the Serbian market in 2019 is characterized with reduced content of carbon by 30% compared to the universal Portland cement. In addition to its basic application for housing building, it is an ideal solution for concrete works at massive elements where lower shrinking is required (dams, bridge foundations, wind park pillars foundations, etc.)
By combining granulated slag and ash, this type of cement fulfills all requirements of infrastructure projects related to durability and endurance in aggressive environments, such as collectors and sewage systems, farm concretes and bio-waste silos (environments rich in sulfates, nitrates and chlorides). It contains low level of alkalis, thus it’s suitable for all types of aggregates – both natural and recycled. It’s characterized with proper cohesion and workability, which is favorable for concrete mixtures intended for pumping.
On the other hand, CEM II/B-M(S-V)42,5N LH has rather high strengths after 28 days of cement prisms tending, therefore can be used for concrete types such as C40/50 which sets it apart from other cements of low thermal hydration, type CEM III/A or CEM III/B. It’s presently used for construction of the block B3 at the thermal power plant Kostolac and foundation plates of the silo for de-sulfuring at the thermal power plant in Obrenovac, as well as for construction of the road bridge over the Sava River on the state road Ib no. 21 (M-21) nearby Sabac, section Novi Sad – Ruma – Sabac.

Green Infrastructure Binders
Lafarge hydraulic binders (HRB binders) used for construction and reconstruction of roads are characterized with up to 25% lesser carbon footprint compared to cement traditionally used for such purposes. Lafarge portfolio offers two types of HRB binders – BeoSol, based on cement and BeoBond, based on cement with lime additive. While BeoSol products are intended for soil stabilization and modification of materials of poorer properties for roads and plateaus construction, BeoBond binders are designed for treatment of certain types of soil with high percentage of moisture and high content of clay particles.
Infrastructure methods Lafarge is lately focused on – soil stabilization and cold recycling represent ecological alternative to the traditional technique of roads construction and reconstruction. Namely, both methods imply application of HRB binders with use of existing materials from the site, preventing additional exploitation of natural resources, creation of deposits of excavated materials on site, reducing transportation costs and additional emission of gasses caused by raw materials transportation. Furthermore, due to its performances, Lafarge HRB binders reduce mechanization engagement, which directly affects the quantity of harmful gasses emission to the atmosphere, ranking Lafarge binders as environmental-friendly products. Use of these products achieve savings of construction costs as an additional incentive for investors to further use “green” materials and technologies.
In addition to decrease of the environmental footprint and significantly lower investment costs, advantage of the “green” infrastructure methods are faster works execution and more durable roads. Namely, by applying Lafare hydraulic binders, a slower strength gain is accomplished, compared with commonly used materials, which contributes to strengthening the road structure without cracks. Furthermore, use of HRB binder increases waterproof and frost resistance property of treated layer, while, on the other hand, decreases possible change of volume due to temperature or humidity variation.
Cold recycling method is used for the reconstruction of the highway E75 at the section Horgos-Novi Sad, Beocin-Besenovo road reconstruction, as well as Slovac-Lajkovac, and stabilization of support layers is currently being applied at the sections 4, 5 and 6 at the Belgrade Bypass construction. Importance of “green” infrastructure methods in Serbia have been confirmed by the wind farm projects and was also recognized by foreign companies that originate from the countries where green building principles and standards are observed, such as the Japanese company Takenaka, which project required stabilization of approximately 200.000m2 of surface at the beginning of this year.

ECOPact Green Concrete
Green ECOPact concrete was developed for domestic construction sector in 2020, with reduced carbon content by 30% compared to standard concretes, which ranks it the first concrete on the Serbian market that is categorized as eco-material. Use of the ECOPact concrete reduces the quantity of CO2 by up to 100kg per 1m3 of concrete. In other words, to neutralize 100kg of CO2, it takes 7 trees of average age and size, which is achieved by substitution of only 1m3 of standard concrete with ECOPact concretes. Considering estimations that the annual global production of concrete will increase from present 4,5 billion tons to 5,5 billion tons by the end of the XXI century, green concretes justifiably represent the future in the construction industry.
Designed on the basis of cement of low thermal hydration (CEM II/B-M(S-V)42,5N LH), the ECOPact fulfills the widest range of commercial requirements. It is suitable for all reinforced-concrete elements, characterized with comparable, or even more advanced physical-mechanical properties compared to standard concretes. On the other hand, due to its chemical-mineral composition, the ECOPact is suitable for all classes of exposure. By using Lafarge green concrete, total weight within one cubic meter is decreased by approximately 50kg, which imposes such concrete as an excellent solution for support pillars and housing buildings walls. Furthermore, decreased total weight of the ECOPact concrete facilitates and reduces transportation costs. Combination of properties, such as low thermal hydration on one side and high durability and strength on the other, singles out the ECOPact as one of the best solutions for erection of massive foundations and piles for bridges construction.
Green concrete is currently used on one of the most significant industrial sites where, through the partnership with Japanese company Takenaka and by use of green materials and technologies, Lafarge contributes to decrease of the environmental footprint made by building materials.
Green Bag Cement
Certification of new type of cement will be finalized in the future period, with CO2 emissions lower up to 50% compared to the universal Portland cement, which makes Serbia the first country within the Holcim Group to promote the green cement on the market and its first producer as well. If considered that use of the green cement achieves reduction of 330kg of CO2 per ton of cement we can get a clearer picture on contribution made by the cement industry in the global effort on environmental protection.
Lafarge green cement, packed in bags of 25kg and 50kg is intended for the individual building market, concrete mix, preparation of mortar for building and plastering, injection masses and other mixtures for building. It is characterized with proper workability in sense of spreading and binding time, advanced adhesion for brick building materials, as well as lesser weight required by statics of buildings. Its quality class is 42.5, therefore it can be used for plates pouring and production of concrete type C30/37.
